Face Exfoliate
Exfoliating. A term that has recently gained a lot of hype, much like contouring and strobing. Exfoliating is the natural process of shedding dead skin cells. New skin cells come to the surface, making the skin look young, smooth and fresh. Unfortunately, this natural process slows down with age. Which is why you need to exfoliate your face and body more as you age. It is always an important skincare step.
There are various different exfoliating methods the beauty world has introduced. But that’s not what we are going to talk about today. We’re here to discuss how often is one supposed to exfoliate, especially if they’re looking forward to anti-aging results.
Less is more or more is less?
There are varying opinions on how often to exfoliate. Some say once a week, some say twice whereas some say everyday! Who do we listen to then?
Well, let’s first talk about consequences. Over exfoliating means removing way too many skin cells from your body and face. That obviously means damage, which could lead to rashes, redness and anything but beauty radiance. Exfoliating less than required means dry patches of dead skin making you look older.
Basically, skincare differs from person to person. Just like some have oily skin while others have dry, exfoliating is a varying procedure too. You will have to look at your skin to find out what suits you. Start with once a week. Do you see any difference? Are there dry patches? Go on to twice a week. Experiment with caution to reach your perfect skincare.
Don’t stick to the safe side
If you’re thinking of going the safe path by exfoliating minimal amount of times, stop right away. This won’t help with your anti-aging process at all. You will look youthful only if your skin is glowing, smooth, soft and fresh.
Now you do want to get rid of dry skin but at the same time, over doing exfoliating will dry your skin even more. Oily skin can bear the loss of some extra skin cells but dry skin can get much worse.
Start mild
Don’t jump to a harsh exfoliant. Use something mild and gradually increase the number of times you exfoliate. We suggest that you still don’t go for exfoliating everyday. Give your skin some break so the beauty can retain itself. If mild product seems to have no visible effect, opt for something harsher
Final verdict
If you have very dry skin, do not go for more than once a week. If you have oily skin, which is unlikely for mature skin, you can try up to 3 times a week. If there is the slightest sign of redness or harshness, minimize it even more. If you have dry flakes, you may increase the times of exfoliating in your skincare.
It is mostly about messing around with products. Experimenting will lead you to the perfect products and methods that suit your skin type. All we have to say at the end is that don’t go overboard but also don’t under-do it.
